Aspen Elevation Institute

Aspen Elevation Institute (AEI)

The Aspen Elevation Institute (AEI) was founded with a singular mission: to support veterans living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Each year, AEI brings together veterans of all skiing and snowboarding abilities from first-time participants to experienced athletes for a week-long program in Aspen, Colorado during peak ski season.

The Institute's objective extends beyond providing an unforgettable experience. Through research, education, and measurable outcomes, AEI seeks to demonstrate how outdoor recreation, particularly skiing and snowboarding, can positively contribute to the mental health and recovery of veterans. Their long-term vision is to work alongside the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to have these activities recognized as evidence-based therapeutic options eligible for VA-supported wellness and rehabilitation programs.

A Personal Perspective

I had the privilege of attending AEI's inaugural ski and snowboard program during the 2026 season. I arrived in Aspen expecting an experience similar to other veteran-focused ski trips I had participated in over the years. I quickly realized this program was something entirely different.

As part of the program, participants underwent brain imaging before the week began and again later in the program to help researchers study changes associated with the experience. This emphasis on research reinforced that AEI is committed not only to serving veterans but also to building scientific evidence that may influence future treatment approaches.

When I arrived, I was experiencing persistent fatigue, elevated stress, and a lingering sense of depression. By the end of the week, I noticed a level of calm and mental clarity that I had not experienced in decades. While physical activity and time outdoors are known to improve mood, my experience suggested something deeper. The combination of outdoor recreation, peer support, purposeful challenge, and shared experiences with fellow veterans had a lasting impact on my overall well-being. The positive changes have continued well beyond the trip, and both friends and family have commented on the difference they have seen in me.

If you are ever presented with the opportunity to participate in a future AEI ski or snowboard program, I highly encourage you to consider it. Beyond spending a week on the mountain, you will join a community of 20 to 30 fellow veterans who understand many of the same challenges and are committed to supporting one another throughout the experience.
